What’s Included: Workplace Bullying Training in Northern Ireland

Our Workplace Bullying training for Northern Ireland companies aims to raise awareness of bullying in the workplace and equip employers and employees with the tools they need to prevent bullying in the workplace.

The course will focus on bullying behaviour identification by clarifying what is classed as bullying and what is not. It will also highlight the different forms of bullying and explain how to report a case of bullying.

Understanding Bullying & Harassment at Work

Defining Bullying at Work

Bullying is not specifically defined in Northern Irish law. However, the Labour Relations Agency (LRA) explain bullying as:  

“Where one person or persons engage in unwanted conduct in relation to another person, which has the purpose or effect of violating that person’s dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating, or offensive environment for that person.”  

Understanding Harassment at Work

It is important that your employees also recognise what is not bullying at work. In order to do this, it is essential to distinguish bullying from other inappropriate workplace behaviour, such as harassment. It is also important to clearly define what is deemed as appropriate workplace engagement and explain the importance of effective workplace conflict management.  

In contrast to bullying, the unreasonable behaviour defined as harassment is based on an employee’s race, colour, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, or national origin.

As well as the provision of awareness training for all employees as mentioned above, the Code outlines the requirement for the appointed Contact and Nominated person/s to have a full and clear understanding of their role, as well as their duties and obligations under the Code.

Role of a Contact Person

The Code of Practice states that there is value in appointing a contact person to act as the first step for anyone enquiring about a possible bullying case. Their role is to help employees clarify what they are experiencing and empower them to decide what course of action, if any, they may wish to take.  

The role can be crucial, as it often helps to resolve matters earlier and more effectively.

Role of a Nominated Person

We also offer training for the ‘role of nominated person’ to raise awareness of bullying and explain the role of this person in resolving bullying within an organisation.
The nominated person plays a very important role and is pivotal in altering bullying cultures and handling complaints effectively. An employer will nominate a person who has had appropriate training and is familiar with the procedures involved to deal with the complaint on behalf of the organisation.
